A miniaturized CO2 sensor based on the photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS)
Increasingly efficient building insulation may be helping to mitigate climate change by improving energy efficiency, but heavily insulated buildings are not always good for human health. The lack of air flow can result in depletion of oxygen levels and a build-up of carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations. Consequently, more and more consumers and companies are interested in indoor air quality monitors that can “smell” rising levels of CO2 and either alert the user or trigger a ventilation or purifier system. However, widespread adoption of CO2 sensors has been hampered by size, performance and cost constraints to date.
Disruptive environmental sensor technology from Infineon
Now that has changed! Leveraging photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS), Infineon has developed an exceptionally small CO2 sensor that overcomes existing size, cost and performance challenges. The XENSIV? PAS210 CO2 sensor uses a MEMS microphone as the detector. The exceptional sensitivity of this microphone coupled with the integrated PCB design reduce space requirements by more than 75 percent compared with commercially available real CO2 sensors. XENSIV? PAS210 integrates on the PCB the photoacoustic (PAS) transducer including the detector, the infrared source and the optical filter, a microcontroller for signal processing and algorithms, plus a MOSFET chip to drive the infrared source.
